For collegiate athletes, representing the United States on the international stage is an opportunity that extends far beyond competition. The experiences, relationships, and memories created at the FISU World University Games can become part of a much larger journey.

With the launch of Beyond the Games, UniUSA is highlighting former World University Games athletes and exploring where their paths have taken them since wearing the red, white, and blue.

From professional sports and coaching to business, education, and community leadership, the series celebrates the many ways former student-athletes continue to make an impact.

From Adrian College to the World Stage

The inaugural spotlight features Samuel "Sam" Ruffin, a former Adrian College men's ice hockey standout who represented Team USA at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, New York.

Ruffin was part of a historic U.S. men's ice hockey team that captured the silver medal, marking the program's first medal in the event at the World University Games.

The accomplishment represented a significant milestone for Team USA and added an international achievement to Ruffin's collegiate hockey career.

A New Chapter Across the Atlantic

Following his collegiate career, Ruffin continued pursuing professional hockey, eventually taking his talents overseas.

Today, he is a member of the Coventry Blaze, competing in the United Kingdom's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).

His journey from collegiate hockey in Michigan to representing the United States in Lake Placid and competing professionally in England illustrates the different opportunities that can emerge through sport.

More Than a Medal

While medals and international competition are defining moments, the impact of the World University Games extends beyond the final score.

For student-athletes, the Games offer an opportunity to compete internationally, experience different cultures, and represent their country alongside fellow collegiate competitors.

Through Beyond the Games, UniUSA will continue reconnecting with former athletes to highlight their achievements, career paths, and personal journeys after the Games.

Some will continue competing at the highest levels of their sports. Others will build careers and make contributions in entirely different fields.

Each story is unique, but all share a connection to the experience of representing Team USA.

The Story Continues

As UniUSA looks ahead to the 2027 FISU World University Games, Beyond the Games will also celebrate the athletes who helped shape the organization's history.

Ruffin's journey is the first of many stories highlighting the lasting connections between collegiate athletics, international competition, and life beyond the Games.
